Malone to coach the bigs

Just heard it on 1280 the zone.
I was multi tasking so ill be glad to listen again when they post link to interview later...But I THINK he said Kanter & Favors have more talent (ability/potential?) than He (Malone) ever did....and that with a little coaching, they will both be beasts.

Please, please let him sit the bench and do the halftime interviews.

Just read about it. It's only going to be during the summer and he isn't even getting paid for it. Probably not as big a deal as it could be. I would love to see Karl as an assistant on the bench. He would light a fire under some ass's for sure.

Moni over at jazzfanatical.wordpress.com said that the 1280 guys were just trashing Malone the other day, saying he should never be allowed to coach for the Jazz.

I personally think it couldn't hurt. Malone has been eager to pass along some of his knowledge for a while, and a crazy athlete like Favors is exactly the sort of player that could put it to good use.

One other thing he can teach them is what it really means to work hard. Malone's workouts are legendary.

I like this idea. I'm optimistic that Malone's "Louisiana camp" for Favors and Kanters will be a good thing. Interesting that it happened only a few days after Malone's comments following the Hornacek hiring, which were that he was available for assistant coaching if Hornacek needed him. Maybe the Jazz brain trust figured they finally ought to try to make use of Malone in some way before Phoenix possibly made use of him. Having Malone run a camp for these guys in Louisiana is a smart way for the Jazz to dip their toes in the water on working with Malone. Malone won't overshadow Ty, and the front office won't run the risk of Malone getting all caught up in the Salt Lake media like he is sometimes prone to do when he is here.

Of course the article says if things go really well, they may decide to bring him on over here for some more coaching. At the very least, maybe Malone could turn this in to annual, productive summer camp for Jazz big men in Louisiana.

Word has it that when Malone puts on a tractor pull down at the Louisiana ranch, he does the pull without the truck.

Well, I'll be damned, never thought this would happen but its perfect. He is not a Jazz assistant coach, but if you are Favors and Kanter, what, you don't want to work out with a former Jazz Player-HOFer- Top 50 Who Ever Played the Game? Karl was "no better" than these two, especially Favors (with similar physical gifts) at the same age. He is living proof that of what epic hard work can do and where one can take their game. Just being around a guy like him, a take no prisoners sort, is gonna be a good thing for developing their game faces.

But...as discussed in the past, Karl doesn't seem, from the outside, like a coach-type guy. He did it all on internal burn and natural talent- not like you can teach that, but perhaps he can inspire that in others? Though, can't discount his time in the league, tricks of the trade, stuff like that he can pass on.

Now, when they gonna bring Stock in as an assistant? Seriously. Aren't his kids about grown up by now, he's done shuttling them to soccer games and shit? You can't tell me he just shelved that competitive fire and is done with hoops. Or is he?

No offense MT, but I disagree with one of your assertions. When internal burn = hard work, as was the case with Karl, then anyone with equal or more talent can be taught to duplicate his success. Both these young men bonded with Jefferson and learned from him. Karl is a better role model than Jefferson because Karl can teach them how to get to the line, take contact and finish, etc. Jefferson was one of the worst big men in the league at getting to the line for freebie points. I think if you take two young bigs who have shown a willingness to learn and work hard, sending them to a camp with Karl is a great idea. Both of these guys, I think have the internal burn/drive to benefit from Karl's teachings.

As for Stockton, I totally agree he would be a great addition to the coaching staff, as was Horny. One thing for sure, we're going to need a quality assistant to replace Jeff or things are going to get worse long before they get better.

Not sure how much Kanter will get out of this since he can't really work out or play until August, but it's still good news.

Also, a Trib article says Kanter will completely miss the Summer leagues (bummer). But, getting him some Malone-time sounds great to me.

Great! Maybe Malone can teach us how to set a pick, because since Corbin has been our coach our picks have been pathetic, it's like we didn't have anyone in the staff that knew how to set a pick... Well now we do, and if we get those guys setting brick wall picks, with the speed of DS (assuming we draft him) then our pick and roll game should be much improved.
After watching the jazz run the pick and roll to perfection for 20 years and 4 good years or so of pick and rolls with Deron and Loozer. It has been painful to watch the patheticness that has been the pick and roll for the jazz these past few years. If you set brick wall screens and play top 5 D, you are going to win plenty of games even if you play lackluster O.

As for Stockton being our assistant coach... Sorry fellas, but that is never going to happen.
Stockton isn't the most vocal person, he hates interviews, he has stated time and time again that he doesn't want to coach. But I would love it if he had a change of heart.
I think the best case scenario is Stock does what Malone is doing b coming in during the summer and working with the young Pgs (assuming we get a couple). Plus if we really wanted to get Stock in the fold, we should sign his son Michael Stockton to be our 3rd pg. I was wanting us to sign him last year after what I saw out of him in the summer league. I think he is better than watson or tinsley. He plays like a lesser Stockton. He is a pass first guy, he has an outside touch, has a knack for getting some steals and loose balls, and he plays pesky hustle D like stock. I just didn't see the risk of signing him, he is better than the two old guys we had, he can be had very cheap, he can only get better, whereas our guys could only get worse. It seemed like a low risk, potentially high reward kind of guy. Plus if he has even a hint of Stocks work ethic, I know he could find a place for himself as a rotational player in this league. I really hope we bring him to the summer league again so I can see how much he has improved his game

I'm right there with yah mag. We will never get to enjoy the perfection that was Stockton to Malone again. I mean to see an offensive system run to perfection for 18 years is something that only the jazz and spurs organizations have been able to achieve. I really don't see us ever being as good as we were for as long as we were again. Stockton was the picture perfect superstar for this Utah team, he fit the state so well. Who knew when we drafted him that we were getting a match made in heaven. And as much as I love Malone, he would have bolted out of Utah if it wasn't for stock. Stockton would have stayed loyal to whichever team drafted him. I am just happy it was us that drafted that small white guy, from that small school, who (little did the rest of the league know) had a rediculous work ethic and the passion for the game that only the legends posses.

With the timing of this Malone coaching thing, I have to wonder if it is more of a damage control move on the part of the Jazz due to Horny leaving. I mean, there has been little backlash about Jeff leaving because the media focus instantly shifted to Malone coming aboard. I really don't think it's within Karl's personality to stick with this. More of a part time summer gig.

You know, I think this may have something to do with Al 100% not coming back too. Our young bigs no longer have someone to learn from.

Yeah I think you're right Mu. I also would like Kanter to someday down the road to go work out with Hakeem for a summer. I think Malone is the perfect fit to teach Favors, but Kanter has the finess and touch to work with guys like big Al or Hakeem. But if Karl can teach them how to set a brick pick this summer, I will be estatic about them working with him, because it was evident that big Al and Millsap were not good bigs to learn from when it comes to setting picks.
Although I can't put the blame completely on the bigs for our poor picks, the guards for the most part would go too quick or wait too long to use them. Also without having big Al down low we need to start running more plays and having a lot more movement without the ball. (the main reason I want Korver, he is great at moving withoutthe ball) we are not going to get away with all the standing around and watching that we did last year.
I think if we dont get a guy like Tyreke, we should just keep quiet this offseason and just sign 1 year contracts to get to the cap. Next year will be a much stronger draft than this years, and I would like to have decent pick in it.
