So, New rumor out today is that CP3 and D12 are looking ot team up next season.
Assuming that they would take a discounted (From the MAX) to get on to the same team, and assuming that the salaries would still have to be north of 15 Million each, there are only really three teams that could even have the ability to sign both of them outright... Dallas, Atlanta, and Utah.
The only other realistic options are either the Lakers or Clippers jettisoning enough salary to get enough cap room to sign the other player. In the Lakers case they would have to dump Kobe and Gasol, in the Clippers case they would have to dump Jordan and Butler.
So why is it going to be Dallas?
First of all, if you are a player looking to build a super team for the express purpose of winning a Championships what is the #1 thing you are going to demand from the team you are going to sign with? That they won't dismantle the team because of financial concerns. Of the three teams on the list, only Dallas can really say that with a straight face.
If the Mavs dump Marion and either dump or stash the #12 pick this year (if they really are offering up their #12 for somebody to take Marion off of their hands I think the Jazz should do that in a heartbeat), dump everybody else and Mayo opts out then they would have roughly $30 Million in cap space, just enough to get both D12 and CP3.
Of course, it's all contingent on whether or not Paul and Howard are willing to leave something in the neighborhood of $40-$50 Million EACH (probably more for Dwight) in guaranteed salary over 5 years on the table in order to team up. Given that this will probably not be the last contract for either of them the actual difference in what they will make is probably smaller, but still, it's going to cost them A LOT of money to do this.
Cuban has been hot after both of these guys for years now. Dirk has already said he's ready to take a "huge" pay cut to make another title run. Paul and Dwight are good friends who I think are starting to be very interested in their legacy and are damn tired of playing with guys who they don't really seem to like.
I'm starting to think this has a very legit chance of happening, so prepare yourselves for the Dwight/Dirk/CP3 super team Jazz fans.
