College Player Scores 138 Points in a Game Empty
PostSubject: College Player Scores 138 Points in a Game   College Player Scores 138 Points in a Game EmptyWed Nov 21, 2012 1:38 pm

Quote :

Grinnell's Jack Taylor didn't just amend the NCAA's record books when he scored 138 points -- a new collegiate high mark -- in his team's 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible Tuesday night. The Division III star wrote a new chapter.

"There was a point during the second half where I hit a number of threes in a row -- maybe seven or eight -- I felt like anything I threw up was going in," Taylor said. "I've been in the zone before but I've never taken so many shots."

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/8658462/jack-taylor-grinnell-drops-138-points-collegiate-scoring-record

How many shots did he take? 108!! 71 of them were 3's!!! And he only played 36 minutes!!!!

Holy freaking crap man, check out the Box score...

http://pioneers.grinnell.edu/boxscore.aspx?path=mbball&id=575

Just to further put that in perspective, in the NBA in a 48 minute regulation game, only 4 teams in the last 10 years have attempted 108 or more shots in a game...the entire team.

I can't even imagine being able to score 138 points in 36 minutes of running time if I was shooting by myself.

Steven A. Smith ripped into this "accomplishment" pretty hard on ESPN First Take this morning.

He talked about the bad sportsmanship of allowing Taylor riven be in the game jacking shots when they won by over 70 points. He talked about the horrible "team work" of one player taking over 80% of the teams shots in the game.

It takes skill to put up that many points in any level of ball, but I agree with Smith in this case, there is more wrong with this story than is good.

Smith is a douche who always tries to talk a hard game regardless of whether or not he knows anything about anything. He's the black Gordon Monson, or maybe Gordon is the white Stephen A, regardless, they both annoy me for the same reason.

Read Eamonn Brennans piece about the teams system and look at the box score to take note of the fact that 20, no kidding...20, guys played in that game for Grinnell.

The only reason it happened was BECAUSE of teamwork, and crying foul of sportsmanship is just a lazy cop out.

I'm all about team basketball and sportsmanship, but I don't think there is anything wrong with this story, in fact I think everything is right about it.

They were up 40 at the half and the game was already over, their system is designed to be played at one speed, blisteringly fast, and winning or losing they normally rotate in fresh 5 man platoons every 5 minutes or so (which is why they have and play 20 players) and jack up shots at a rate that would make Mike D'Antoni blush. So instead of going out and playing a pointless second half for no reason they realized that they had a guy who was so hot in the first half he'd scored over 50 points, so they got exited about the opportunity to be a part of something special, a 100 point game, they rallied around their guy, and they stormed their way into the NCAA record books.

I just don't get how this is not an amazingly positive story.

I was shocked to see that is was a white dude Laughing

I think you have your stephen a smith answer right there. It's a pretty blatant pattern with him actually.
